On the 25th of September, Hipoges participated, on the CMS 14th NPL Iberian Forum in the heart of Lisbon. This event was organised by the CMS Group and had the support of the VDA Vieira de Almeida – a leading Law firm in Portugal. The event took place at the VDA Auditorium, a beautiful award-winning rehabilitation project in Lisbon’s riverside area, an ideal location to share knowledge in a professional networking environment.

In addition, our Chief Operating Officer, Portugal – Armando Castanheira participated in one of the enriching panels, debating the market perspectives and overviews on different types of NPLs, alongside other speakers from companies like ActiveCap – Capital Partners, SCR, S.A. and Finsolutia.

What were the sessions about at the VDA Auditorium?
During this 14th edition of NPL Iberian Forum organised by the CMS Group, a total of 4 sessions took place, where industry experts were able to share their views on different areas of the NPL market. The panels were:
- NPLs: Market perspective and overview on different types of NPLs
In this session, Armando Castanheira was one of the key experts, debating topics such as how well provisioned are the banks and will new loan defaults force new portfolio sales? The impact of interest rates on prices. Corporate loans, judicial recovery and REO’s what to expect in the short term? It was a fulfilling session.
- NPL Transactions: Direct sales and securitization
For this session, the panellists discussed how active investors in the NPL Portuguese market have been increasingly using the securitization tool, particularly in the private market. What are the benefits and current hurdles in this segment? And how do the different options work.
- NPL Servicing: New business models and the importance of technology to accelerate
Some key questions in this enriching session were how technology is impacting the efficiency of the collections industry and how can it impulse the Servicer’s processes and its collections ratios? It is a reality that the industry is changing due to technology advancements.
- Adapting to European Regulations and legal developments in Portugal
At this final session, the main topic was how the new Portuguese Banking Activity Code is expected to be approved in 2025. Panellists debated how it will replace the current legal framework governing banking activities and the provision of financial services in Portugal? Also in this enriching discussion, speakers touched on how the transposition of European regulations in NPLs will change the rules for Servicers?
In addition to the sessions and panel discussions, the event offered great networking opportunities for delegates. With 65% of the audience coming from Investment firms and financial institutions. As well as Hipoges taking part as a main sponsor, so were other companies with the largest amount of assets under management.
Throughout the afternoon of the event and into the early evening, there were coffee breaks where decision-makers could share best practices, explore partnerships, and build relationships to navigate the complexities of the NPL market. This networking time allowed participants to engage in deeper discussions about specific challenges and emerging solutions.
